4.).. This Issue's quote:

The three - body, mind and soul - are like a tripod. The world stands by their combination; in them everything abides. This combination exits for the sake of the Purusha or conscious being. It is the subject matter of Ayurveda for which the teaching of Ayurveda have been revealed.

- Charaka Samhita, Sutrasthana I. 46-47

5.).. Mouth Ulcers - The Ayurveda approach: Edited by Gilgi Hauser

This is a common enough complaint to make life miserable for the sufferers who can neither eat nor speak! There is a reddening of the oral cavity - the lips, gums, and mucosa of the cheek, tongue and palate. There is a burning sensation and an intolerance to pungent foods. There may also be the occasional ulcer with its characteristic yellow and white center, surrounded with red rays.

This illness is generally easy to treat by self help method and our suggested home remedy includes 500 grams of Khadir (powder of Acacia catechu) mixed with a glass of water to be used for gargling. Decoction of Triphala will also do the trick. Another remedy is to locally apply a paste of Tankan or Suvarnagairik in Ghee.

Mouth ulcers are commonly accompanied by anorexia and constipation. One tsf  of Triphala or one tsp. of castor oil helps to relieve constipation. If this proves ineffective, remedies suggested for Agnimandya can be followed. Kindly visit http://chakrapaniayurveda.com/newsletter.html  to know more on Agnimandhya.

If the ulcers are repetitive, one must look for the  irritated Dosha and then treat and balance it.

If Vata Dosha is upset, then the lips and mouth becomes fissured and ulcers occur in the oral cavity (by the time one ulcer heals another is ready to harass you); one also is unable to  tolerate cold water. In such a situation, one can apply a paste in which Pippli (Piper longum), cardamom and rock salt are mixed together with Ghee, cream or milk. Sometimes one  can get immediate relief by gargling with sesame oil.

If it is the Pitta Dosha that is upset, then a burning sensation in the mouth and a bitter taste in the mouth early in the morning are the main symptoms. Gargling with Tiphala decoction proves effective. Chewing the leaves of Jai (Jasminum grandifalorum) or locally applying a paste made by mixing Suvarnagairik in Ghee is helpful.

On the other hand, if in the morning the mouth gets filled with thick saliva, or if the ulcers are covered by mucous secretions, it is indicative of a Kapha Dosha abnormality. Gargling with a mixture of honey and Triphala decoction is useful. If this problem persists, a light diet is recommended. Sour, salty foods (like pickles, papadam etc.) and pungent items should be avoided, as should food items like curds, milk, tea, jaggery or beans be avoided too.

One thing to be aware of is that Aphthous mouth ulcers are a sign of some general illness and should not be treated symptomatically. It is important to find and treat the root cause. The best way at individual level is to try the suggested remedies in this article for 3 to 4 days and if you find that there is no improvement in mouth ulcer, kindly consult your nearby Ayurveda physician if you wish an expert advice from Ayurveda.

7.).. Interesting Health News:

Temple Stay May Help People With Mental Disorders

BANGALORE, INDIA: A short stay in a temple or place of worship can actually improve your mental health, a study has shown. Researchers in India found that a six-week stay at a Hindu temple can produce the same improvement in people with severe psychiatric disorders as a month-long course of standard drugs. According to science journal New Scientist, a team led by Mr. Ramanathan Raguram of the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences in Bangalore studied all 31 people who came for help and stayed at the Muthuswamy temple between June and August, 2000. The patients were evaluated by a trained psychiatrist. Six were diagnosed with delusional disorders, 23 with paranoid schizophrenia and two with bipolar disorder. At the end of their stay, their scores on a test called the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale had improved by an average of nearly 20 percent. No specific rituals or ceremonies intended to improve mental health were performed in the temple. The patients attended a simple morning prayer for 15 minutes, and then spent the rest of the day helping out with routine temple work. Mr. Assen Jablensky, an expert on mental disorders at the University of Western Australia, noted that such findings were not specific to India, or any particular faith. For example, he said that a "treatment protocol" in many ways similar to the healing temple of Muthuswamy has been practiced at the traditional therapeutic village of Aro in Nigeria.

Couples Who Smoke More Likely to Have a Girl Child

UK: A study conducted by gynecologist Dr. Claus Yding Anderson and his team at the University Hospital of Copenhagen on 11,800 infants born in Japan and Denmark over a seven-month period has some interesting results. Three control groups were chosen based on the consumption of cigarettes consumed around the time of conception and thereafter - men and women who did not smoke, those who smoked up to 20 cigarettes a day, and those who smoked more than 20 cigarettes a day. The male to female ratio was determined as each of the infants was categorized into one of the three groups. As a general rule, when mothers and fathers smoked, they were more likely to produce a girl child. The article says, "The sex ratio was 1.21 boys to every girl in the group in which neither parent smoked. It fell to 0.82 boys to every girl in the group where both mother and father smoked more than 20 cigarettes a day. The ratio of male births was also reduced to 0.98 boys to every girl among couples where the mother was a non-smoker, but the father smoked more than 20 cigarettes a day." Dr. Anderson sites two reasons for the results, "We have found that the male sperm cell is more susceptible to smoking. Or it could be that smoking affects the implantation of the male conceptus in the uterus." The article also goes on to say that men and women with high stress jobs such as jet pilots and divers, also produce more girl babies. However, on the planet Earth as a whole, the birth of boys is slightly greater than the birth rate of girls.
